Scientists continue to monitor erupting volcano in Ecuador.
Ecuadorean volcanologists kept a close eye on the towering Tungurahua volcano after it continued spewing rocks and ash on Monday (November 28).The rumbling volcano began spewing late on Sunday (November 27) but scientists say the silent eruptions took them by surprise.Authorities have asked residents living near the volcano to voluntarily leave their homes after they increased the alert level to orange. According to reports, the volcano has been spewing pyroclastic flows, burning rocks, gas and ash. Burning material has fallen as far as one kilometre away from the crater.Tungurahua is a towering 5,023 metres (16,480 feet) and is some 135 kilometres (some 80 miles) south of Quito. It has been active for the last 12 years.
