Manipur violence: nearly 54 killed amid violent protests, clashes with police
(Web Desk) – Following the ongoing tension in the northeastern Indian of Manipur, almost 54 people have lost their lives.
The violence initially broke out on May 3 during protests against the inclusion of the non-tribal Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes category, which would grant them certain privileges.
The security has been increased with army personnel coming to the area and roadblocks have been placed at the site of militants clash with security forces.
The tribals, mainly Kukis and Nagas, organised protest after decision to award ‘Meitei’- almost 53 percent of population in state - a tribe status.
The other tribals – Kukis and Nagas – protested against the decision and arranged massive violent protest which led to the clash between the security forces and militants.
An encounter took place at Saiton in Churachandpur district between the security forces and the militants in which four militants were gunned down, the police said.
Meanwhile, government officials in New Delhi, including Law Minister Kiren Rijiju and Home Minister Amit Shah said they were observing the situation and ordered security forces to ensure safety in the area.
