Summary A moderate 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra island.
The quake hit at a relatively shallow depth of 14 kilometres (nine miles) at 01:23 local time (18:23 GMT) around 213 kilometres (76 miles) west of Tanjungkarang-Telukbetung on Sumatra, the US Geological Survey said.There were no immediate reports of casualties or tsunami warnings or advisories on the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centers website.Three people were killed last week when a 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesias Sumatra island.Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity, and Sumatra is particularly prone to earthquakes.
