North Dakota: Melting snow causes flood

Melting snow has been causing the Red River to rise in Fargo, North Dakota. But in spite of some flooding, residents are hopeful because the rapid rise seems to be leveling off. Steve Goldade, a resident of Fargo, seems cautiously optimistic. I just hope its gonna start to recede. Thats what I hope. If it stops at this elevation, well be fine, said Goldade. Hundreds of volunteers, state and federal emergency officials, and National Guard troops have been patrolling the dikes along the river to watch for potential breaches. Placement of sandbags, water pumping, and other preparations have helped protect most homes and businesses, and the city has 235,000 more sandbags in reserve if the crest is higher than expected.According to US Senator Kent Conrad, local officials have been prepared and vigilant. They moved early in light of the flood forecast we were facing, said the Senator. Thats precisely what they should have done.
