SRINAGAR (Web Desk) – At least three Kashmiri youth were martyred in Shopian district and two Indian soldiers were killed in a latest bloodshed in the disputed Himalayan territory.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the youth were martyred by the troops during a siege and search operation in Awneera area of the district.
The martyred youth have been identified as Umar Majid Sheikh, resident of Kathpora Yaripora; Adil Malik, resident of Malikgund Shopian and Irfanul Sheikh, resident of Malldaira Shopian.
In a joint operation of 55 Rashtriya Rifles personnel, special operations group of police and Central Reserve Police Force, a mosque and four residential houses were blasted late last night in Awneera area.
As news of their death spread, hundreds of residents from neighbouring villages took to the streets in protest, throwing stones at soldiers and chanting slogans against Indian rule.
Many civilians were injured when troops resorted to pellet firing on the protesters. The injured were shifted to District Hospital Kulgam for treatment.
Earlier, two Indian army men were killed and several others injured in an attack on the forces’ personnel who were part of the joint operation in the area.
In a separate incident early Sunday, three more Indian forces’ personnel were injured when a patrol party came under attack in Hajin area of Bandipora district. The injured personnel were taken to a hospital for treatment, the official said.
