300,000 tonnes of stone were used in the construction of the mosque

(Web Desk) - Located In Muscat, the Sultanate of Oman s central mosque, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is truly an impressive and awe-inspiring piece of architecture. For two decades, this mosque has been a symbol of magnificence and a popular attraction in Oman.

The mosque s architecture is modern in nature and the beautifully constructed mihrab, minaars and dome are a testament to the hard work put in by the skilled craftsmen who built the mosque.



In 1995, the mosque s construction was started by the order of Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said. The mosque was completed within a period of six years and four months.



For the construction of the mosque, 3 lakh tonnes of stone were imported from India. In the central hall of the mosque lies the second biggest carpet of the world, weighing 21 tonnes. The carpet features a blend of 28 different colours.



The most significant feature in the main hall of the mosque is the ornate chandelier ordained with 600,000 shining bright Swarovski crystals and 24 carat gold plating. It weighs a staggering 8.5 tonnes and is 14 metres tall. The view of the chandelier against the intricately carved niches in the ceiling is an out-worldly sight.



Stretching across 40,000 square metres, this mosque has the capacity of holding 20,000 worshippers. The whole mosque complex occupies 416,000 square metres and is surrounded by lush green laws that add to the beauty of the mosque.



The main hall of the mosque can hold 6,500 worshippers while there is prayer hall for women that has the capacity for 750 worshippers. The mosque also has a library which holds 20,000 books.
