Summary The election commission has issued a ten-page order.
SRINAGAR (Dunya News) - Election Commission of India has suspended by polls in occupied Kashmir for an indefinite period in the aftermath of the persisting tense situation.
A ten-page order says that the situation is not favourable for holding elections as there is an uncontrollable wave of protests in the valley alongwith an increase of border tension and armed attacks on soldiers.
The order asserts that in view of the above circumstances the proposed elections for one seat of parliament have been suspended for indefinite period.
Earlier, the election commission has also deferred the polling in Anantnag as the process was marked by a total boycott, curfew, restrictions and complete shutdown.
Polling in the valley was suspended after 12 youth including two teenage boys were shot dead and around a hundred were injured after Indian forces opened fire on demonstrators protesting against the holding of sham Indian parliamentary elections.
Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since the end of British rule in 1947. Both claim the disputed territory in its entirety. Around 500,000 Indian soldiers are deployed in the region.
