He was admitted to hospital, reportedly suffering from internal bleeding. Black banners were hung in his hometown to mourn his death and women wept openly in the streets. Grand Ayatollah was famous for backing 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. He also criticized the US openly. He held particularly progressive views on the role of women in Islamic society.It is pertinent to mention that Fadlallah distanced himself from Hezbollah over the group's links to Iran.
