Summary

As many as nine people were killed as a small plane crashed in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The plane was reportedly carrying members of the campaign team of Roberto Borge Angulo, who is seeking state governorship for an alliance of parties including the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), a party with huge political influence in the country over the decades. Neither Borge nor Gabriel Mendicutti Loria, his campaign chief, was on the plane, said media reports. The crash occurred 1.5 km from a landing strip at Felipe Carrilo Puerto, a small town near the Carribean coastal town of Tulum, which hosts a Mayan site that is one of Mexico's popular tourist attractions.
