Police: Activists hit cars during strike in Nepal

Summary An alliance of 33 opposition parties ordered a nine-day nationwide transport strike from Tuesday.

KATMANDU (AP) Police say opposition activists have attacked cars that defied a transport blockade aimed at disrupting next week's elections in Nepal.

Police spokesman Ganesh Chetri says strike supporters stopped at least three cars and vandalized them in the capital Katmandu. The passengers were not hurt.

The opposition alliance enforced a nationwide general strike on Monday that forced businesses to close and brought much of the country to a standstill. Markets and businesses opened on Tuesday but most schools remained shut because of the transport strike.

The elections are Nov. 19. The opposition alliance wants the present interim government, led by a judge, disbanded and a new government including all political parties be formed to conduct elections later.
