TONDELA (AP) Portuguese firefighters are still battling wildfires a day after one was killed and nine were injured when winds gusting in a hilly region changed direction.
Commander Antonio Ribeiro of the Serra de Caramulo firefighting division says the crew ran from the flames but the firefighter who died fled in the wrong direction. He said Friday that she was later found dead.
The fire in hills near the small city of Tondela in north central Portugal was brought under control late Thursday, but there were reports Friday of another fire that broke out nearby. Ribeiro says about 200 firefighters were trying to prevent more from starting in hot, dry conditions.
