ALGIERS (AP) - A police official says a militant ambush in a northeastern Algerian region known as an al-Qaida hideout has left three officers dead.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to release information, said the police officers were on patrol Tuesday evening when they were targeted by gunfire in Azzefoun, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) east of the Kabylie capital Tizi-Ouzou.

It was the third militant attack in a week in the Kabylie region in northeastern Algeria. One on Saturday killed an army officer and another left two soldiers wounded.

The area is the last Algerian hideout of al-Qaida, which has been largely defeated in the rest of the north African country. Most militant attacks there target government officers.
