Summary
Torrential rain provoked an avalanche in southwest Peru that killed at least 8 people and injured 20 others, authorities said. A wave of mud and rocks swamped the city of Ayacucho, in the province of Huamanga, located some 500km southeast of Lima. The city is the capital of the region also called Ayacucho. Many cars were caught in the deluge. Some drivers scrambled to safety on top of their vehicles and waited for help to arrive.
