Summary

Torrential storms claimed two more lives across Britain, as concerns grow for vulnerable residents in a Cumbrian town isolated by the collapse or closure of all its surrounding bridges. Hopes are fading of finding a 21-year-old woman swept away in a swollen river in Powys, while police confirmed that a canoeist had died after being pulled from the water in Devon. An urgent safety review was being carried out on all 1,800 bridges in Cumbria, which has been worst hit by the devastating floods. Six have already collapsed and Calva Bridge in Workington was condemned and closed off. More than 1,300 homes were hit by the floods in Cumbria and at the peak of the chaos 5,000 properties were without power. Record 314mm rain is recorded in Cumbria in last 24 hours.
