Summary

Celebrating its contributions towards the world peace, prosperity and development, the United Nations is observing its birthday today, reported Dunya News. The anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter on October 24, 1945 has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. It has traditionally been marked throughout the world by meetings, discussions and exhibits on the achievements and goals of the Organisation. In 1971, the General Assembly recommended that Member States observe it as a public holiday. The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, in his UN Day message says that on this United Nations Day and every day throughout the year, the United Nations is at work for the planet, for jobs, for we the peoples. This sounds particularly true for Pakistan where the UN along with carrying on its support to the achievement of the countrys development goals, it is working tirelessly, regardless of the dangers, to deliver humanitarian assistance in the conflict areas. As said by Ban Ki Moon We deliver more humanitarian aid than anyone and to the toughest places. Since May last year the UN in Pakistan has led the humanitarian response to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). The UN aims are facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and the achieving of world peace. The General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Secretariat, and the International Court of Justice are the principal organs of the UN.Former federal minister Gohar Ayub talking to Dunya News lauded the role of UN. He said that it had played an effective role in natural calamities in Pakistan and other countries. Ayub appreciated the UN efforts in the North Koreas issue as well.
