Summary
Afghan President Hamid Karzai's main election challenger opened the door to working with his rival in a unity government, softening his opposition to future collaboration with the incumbent. Abdullah Abdullah, 49, who served as Karzai's foreign minister from 2001 to 2006, told that when the result of the Aug 20 vote was finally known it was possible to talk about different scenarios.Post announcement, there will be a new environment and my preference will be a second round. Once it is announced, going for a second round, based on that announcement. So, what are other options will be open for that post announcement? Mine will be mainly pursuit of the agenda which is the agenda for change, which is not just changing the leadership (but) changing the system. A system which will function from presidential system to parliamentary system. That I have very clear commitment that I pursue that agenda at any circumstances, Abdullah said from his house in Kabul.Abdullah has in the past ruled out returning to a Karzai government, but in the interview he suggested his stance could soften after the election result is announced. Asked if he still ruled it out, he replied: At the moment that is my position.
