International peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi will meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Saturday in Damascus, a United Nations spokeswoman said Friday.He will meet the Syrian president in the morning on Saturday, Vannina Maestracci said, adding that Brahimi would also see a group of Arab ambassadors, a European Union delegation and opposition figures.She did not provide further details about Brahimis schedule during his first official trip aimed at ending nearly 18 months of ruthless violence, and said she was not sure when he would return to New York.Maestracci confirmed that Brahimi, who is representing the United Nations and the Arab League, met Friday with opposition figures in the National Coordination Committee for Democratic Change, as well as with Russias ambassador and the Chinese charge daffaires.Brahimi, who is on his first Damascus visit since his appointment to replace Kofi Annan, has also met with UN personnel and a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross.Following his arrival in Damascus on Thursday, Brahimi met with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, as well as Irans ambassador to Syria, the spokeswoman said.
