Guilio Andreotti, Italys former prime minister and an emblematic figure in Italian post-war politics, has been admitted to hospital with an irregular heartbeat, media reported Sunday.Andreotti has been under observation in a Rome clinic since Saturday, the hospital said, according to media reports, adding that his condition was satisfactory. The 93-year-old was previously admitted to the clinic in May with a heart problem after having trouble breathing.Andreotti entered parliament in 1946 at the end of World War II, never to leave it. Seven times premier and 21 times minister, he has been a senator for life since 1991. He was a leading light in the former Christian Democratic party, destroyed by the anti-Mafia Mani Pulite probe in the 1990s.The controversial figure has accumulated several nicknames during his career, including stainless steel for his political longevity. He was immortalised in the film Il Divo (The God) directed by Paolo Sorrentino, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2008.
