British opposition seek explanation over role in Lockerbie release

The British government came under pressure Saturday to explain its role in the release of the Lockerbie bomber but strongly denied Libyan claims it was linked to trade deals. But British opposition parties said Prime Minister Gordon Brown had serious questions to answer over the decision to free Megrahi. Foreign Secretary David Miliband also insisted Friday that Britain had left the decision solely to Scotland, whose devolved administration can take decisions independently of London on justice matters but not foreign affairs. He said the British and US officials had concerns over the warm welcome Megrahi received at Tripoli airport. On the other hand, Colonel Kadhafi himself said thank you to Queen Elizabeth and Gordon Brown for playing key role in Megrahis release. Whereas, spokesman of Buckingham palace said the release was Scotlands internal issue.
