Summary General Bikram Singh formally has formally taken over as Indias 27th Chief of Army Staff.

General Bikram Singh formally took over as the 27th Chief of Army Staff consequent to General Vijay Kumar Singh hanging his boots in New Delhi on Thursday.General Bikram Singh (59) would be the first Army Chief to head the 1.3 million-force without having participated in a full-fledged war theatre although he was the key officer who monitored the Kargil conflict while serving at the Army Headquarters in the Military Operations Directorate.A third generation army officer, General Singh was commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry on March 31, 1972. He is a recipient of the Ati Vishist Seva Medal and Yudh Seva Medal.General Bikram Singh will have tenure of two years and three months in the top post. Prior to his appointment as Army Chief, he was commanding the strategically important Eastern Army Command with its headquarters in Kolkata.He has held several important appointments in counter insurgency areas as the Corps Commander of Srinagar-based XV Corps and Akhnoor-based X Division as Major General.
