Babri mosque demolition: CBI wants Advani to face trial
Updated on

Summary The CBI wants former BJP president L.K Advani to face trial in demolition of Babri Masjid case.

Despite Advani being acquitted in the case in an earlier court order, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been unwilling to let him off the hook. The agencys appeal, which came up in the Supreme Court recently, was against an earlier Allahabad High Court order dismissing the CBI plea against Advanis acquittal.Advani was named along with seven others in an FIR for making provocative speeches to karsevaks, encouraging them to demolish the shrine. Besides Advani, the other accused were Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti, Vinay Katiyar, Ashok Singhal, Giriraj Kishore, Vishnu Hari Dalmiya and Sadhvi Ritambhara. All eight had been named in a separate FIR, but the CBI has been opposing the de-linking of FIR with the one filed against the karsevaks. The agency wants all eight to be tried along with the other accused karsevaks. The CBI told the Supreme Court that the investigations by it had disclosed that there was a single larger conspiracy to demolish the disputed structure on December 12, 1992 and various accused so charged in the consolidated charge-sheet in all the 49 cases played their own roles in achieving the objective of the said criminal conspiracy.
