Loyal followers of Saint Malverde took part in a street procession to mark the 102nd anniversary of the execution of Malverde in Maxico.Malverde is followed by residents and drug traffickers in northern states. He was an outlaw figure who robbed corrupt officials and gave the spoils to the poor in the early 1900s. Malverde was executed on May 9, 1909. Hundreds of believers went to chapel dedicated to Malverde, to leave flowers and lit candles to thank him for favours granted.The state capital Culiacan, is the cradle of the narco culture. It even spawned a folk music genre, narco-corrido, glorifying the exploits of some of the most audacious smugglers. Drug violence has claimed more than 38,000 lives in Mexico since 2006.
