A German farmer who for six years lived without arms following an accident has expressed happiness about his new life on Wednesday, one year after a successful transplant. Munich doctors performed the 15-hour operation, the worlds first of its kind, on the night of July 25-26, 2008. Six years previously, Karl Merk had suffered a serious accident on his farm. Merk received his new arms from an anonymous deceased organ donor. Doctors decided to carry out the operation after Merks body refused to accept artificial limbs. It was the first time two complete arms were transplanted.
