Summary

Britains Mark Cavendish won the 11th stage of the Tour de France, beating Americas Tyler Farrar in a sprint finish at the end of a 192-km ride from Vatan to St Fargeau today. As well as claiming his fourth stage win in this years Tour, Cavendish regained the green jersey from Norways Thor Hushovd. He has also now matched Barry Hobans British record, set between 1967 and 1975, of eight career stage wins. Where Hoban claimed his last stage win at the age of 35, Cavendish is still just 24 and will may yet break the record this year.On an almost completely flat stage Johan Van Summeren and Marcin Sapa both escaped after 24km and at one point had built up a lead of four and a half minutes, but both were caught by the peloton with 5km to go, setting up the widely-anticipated sprint finish.Farrar finished second, about half a bike length behind Cavendish, and Yauheni Hutarovich of Belarus came in third. Italys Rinaldo Nocentini retained the overall leaders yellow jersey, ahead of Spains Alberto Contador and Americas Lance Armstrong.
