Summary Brianna Rollins took gold as the US clinched a historic first ever clean sweep of 100m hurdles.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Brianna Rollins took gold as the United States clinched a historic first ever clean sweep of 100m hurdles medals here Wednesday.

Rollins, the 2013 world champion, produced a silky smooth display over the barriers to zip over the line in 12.48sec ahead of compatriot Nia Ali, who took silver in 12.59.

Kristi Castlin, the 28-year-old from Los Angeles, faced an agonising wait of a few seconds befor her bronze medal was confirmed after she crossed in 12.61sec.

The American women hugged each other and jumped up and down after the sweep was confirmed.

The victory reflected the USA s incredible strength in depth in the event this year.

Seven different American women have clocked the seven top times in the world this year.

They include Kendra Harrison, who set a new world record last month yet who missed out on a place on the team for Rio at the US Olympic trials in Eugene.
