Summary Rory McIlroy confirmed Wednesday he'll skip the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - World number three Rory McIlroy confirmed Wednesday he ll skip the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth as he tries to stay fresh in a busy season that includes both the Olympics and Ryder Cup.

Speaking on his 27th birthday, and on the eve of his title defence at the US PGA Tour s Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, McIlroy outlined an upcoming schedule that doesn t include the European Tour s flagship event May 26-29.

"The reason that I took three weeks off after Augusta was I m not going to have more than a week off until after the Ryder Cup," McIlroy said.

"I m playing here, next week at The Players, the Irish Open, then I ll take a week off.

"Then it s basically week-on, week-off from there," said McIlroy, who will play the USPGA Memorial hosted by Jack Nicklaus in Ohio prior to a week off before the US Open at Oakmont in Pennsylvania.

"You can t play every week," McIlroy said. "You want to feel as fresh as you can for every tournament you play."

McIlroy will take a week off after the US Open then play in the European Tour s French Open, opting out of the World Golf Championships  Bridgestone Championship in Akron, Ohio.
