Summary Kristian Sbaragli outsprinted his rivals to win the 10th stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Monday.
CASTELLON (AP) - Kristian Sbaragli of Italy outsprinted his rivals to win the 10th stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Monday, while Tom Dumoulin of Netherlands retained the overall leader s red jersey.
Sbaragli crossed the line inches ahead of second-place John Degenkolb of Germany and Jose Joaquin Rojas of Spain. All three finished on the same time.
The 25-year-old MTN-Qhubeka rider said he was delighted with his first Vuelta stage win because he d lost a sprint to Degenkolb two days earlier.
"I needed to anticipate Degenkolb s final charge because I knew he was a bit faster than I," Sbaragli said. "I risked it two stages ago and he shot past me with just 30 meters (yards) to go."
Dumoulin has a 57-second overall lead over 36-year-old Spanish rider Joaquin Rodriguez, with Esteban Chaves of Colombia another two seconds adrift.
Niki Terpstra held a 10-second lead late in the stage but was caught as the chasing group began to ascend the Alto del Desierto summit, leading to a mass sprint for the line.
Tuesday is a rest day for the riders.
