Summary Organisers said that all players will start as scheduled from the first tee

ST ANDREWS (AFP) - Play was set to resume at 10 a.m. (0900GMT) Friday in the British Open second round following a three and a half hour delay caused by torrential rain.

The bad weather sweeping in off the North Sea had been widely forecast and it arrived on time just as the first players took to the tee for round two in the early morning.

Organisers also said that all players will start as scheduled from the first tee instead off alternate 1st and 10th tee starts to make up for lost time.

First round leader Dustin Johnson had been scheduled to tee off at 2:34 p.m, playing with Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth, who is two shots back.

But the delay may mean that they, and the later starters, will be unable to complete their second round by day s end.

Head of Rules for the R&A, David Rickman, told the BBC: "Staff have cleared a lot of the water so the course should be playable.

"Two groups already started when play was stopped just after 6:30am, one on the first fairway, and one on the green. So those who started will replace their balls and carry on from there.

"Golfers will have to play the ball as it lies but the casual water rule will apply. So players have free relief if their ball or their stance is in the water."
