RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Sao Paulo s Corinthians Arena will host football at next year s Olympics, media reported Thursday, after weeks of wrangling over who must foot the bill for adapting the stadium.

FIFA in March had earmarked the stadium, which was built ahead of last year s World Cup, as one of seven venues to stage matches across six cities.

But disagreements emerged between Olympics organizers, the club and the Sao Paulo football federation on who would foot a bill believed to be around $4 million to adapt the stadium, which is also home to top flight side Corinthians.

The disagreement on the so-called "overlay" costs meant the venue was kept off the schedule, even as tickets went on sale a month ago for the Games taking place August 5-21, 2016.

The initial sales phase for Olympics tickets was due to end at midnight Friday (0300 GMT Saturday), ahead of a second phase in July. In October, those residing in Brazil will be able to purchase remaining tickets in a first-come, first-served process.

Foreign fans must apply through a separate process to buy tickets to South America s first ever Olympics, with on-site box office sales for remaining tickets to start in June of next year.

Globo s web news portal G1 reported late Thursday that the Sao Paulo prefecture and Games organizers had reached agreement on principle to allow Sao Paulo to stage ten soccer matches, including a men s semi-final.

The club were not immediately available for comment.

Soccer is the only sporting event which will take place outside Rio -- with Salvador, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte and Manaus in Amazonia also hosting matches.

Porto Alegre in the south and Fortaleza in the northeast had been possible stand-ins if Sao Paulo had been dropped over the cash row.
