MADRID (AP) - Spain s basketball federation says Juan Antonio Orenga resigned as national coach on Tuesday after failing to achieve the results the country had expected at the World Cup.

After dominating its first six games and beating France by 24 points in the group phase, Spain appeared to be the main candidate to dethrone the United States in a possible final that would have been a rematch of the past two Olympic gold-medal games.

But France avenged that loss with a 65-52 victory over Spain in the quarter finals, ending Spain s quest for a second consecutive title and stunning home fans.

In a statement, the federation said Orenga would still contribute "experience and expertise from a new position still to be decided on."
