Summary

Former world No. 1 Andy Roddick and sixth-seeded Robin Soderling each won their respective quarterfinal matches Friday at the $4.5 million BNP Paribas Open. The seventh-seeded Roddick got past 18th-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-3, 7-5 on the hardcourts at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The hard-serving American star moved on in 1 hour, 17 minutes with the help of two service breaks, one in each set, and six aces. Robredo failed to enjoy even one break- point chance on Day 9. Roddick will next do battle with Soderling of Sweden, who handled fourth- seeded Brit Andy Murray 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in 1 hour, 34 minutes. Murray was this year's Australian Open runner-up to Roger Federer, while Soderling was last year's French Open runner-up to the great Federer. Roddick and Soderling have met twice before, with the Swede winning both of those matches. The other semi was determined on Thursday, with third-seeded and defending Indian Wells champion Rafael Nadal and 20th-seeded Croat Ivan Ljubicic advancing. The former world No. 1 Nadal beat Murray in last year's Indian Wells finale and also titled here in 2007. This week's winner will collect $605,500.
