MELBOURNE (AP) - Hawthorn played true to form and advanced directly to the last four in the Australian Football League finals by beating Sydney while Geelong could not take advantage of playing in its home stadium for the first time in the finals and lost to Fremantle.

The Hawks pulled away from Sydney in the second half for a 15.15 (105) to 7.9 (51) qualifying final win, earning a week off then a preliminary final in Melbourne.

Geelong's match in front of vocal home fans was tight throughout but Fremantle kicked key goals in the final quarter to win 12.15 (87) to 9.18 (72) and take a big stride toward its first-ever AFL grand final.
