MOSCOW (AP) - Olympic champion Ashton Eaton stretched his lead in the decathlon on Sunday despite a scare in the hurdles.
Going into the final three events of the two-day competition, the American holds a 119-point lead over Michael Schrader of Germany.
Another American, 20-year-old Gunnar Nixon, dropped from second to fifth after Sunday's first two events, the 110-meter hurdles and discus.
Eaton ran the fastest 110 in 13.72 seconds despite clipping the second hurdle. He was 12th in the discus, won by Rico Freimuth's 48.74 meters that vaulted the German into third.
Eaton has 6,280 points, Schrader is next with 6,161 and Freimuth has 6,127. Damian Warner of Canada was fourth with 6,110 points and Dixon close behind with 6,108 after losing ground despite a personal best of 42.38 in the discus.
