GUANGZHOU (AP) - Upcoming Indian player P.V. Sindhu on Thursday defeated the defending champion, second-seeded Wang Yihan of China, to enter the women s quarterfinals at the Badminton world championships.
The 18-year-old, 10th-seeded Sindhu won 21-18, 23-21 in 55 minutes to set up a meeting with seventh-seeded Chinese player Wang Shixian.
In another upset, unseeded Carolina Marin of Spain defeated fifth seed Sung Ji Hyun of South Korea, 13-21, 21-13, 22-20 in a tough 75-minute battle.
Sindhu s compatriot, third-seeded Saina Nehwal, also advanced with a hard-fought 18-21, 21-16, 21-14 victory over Thai player Porntip Buranaprasertsuk.
Top-seeded Li Xuerui of China and fourth-seeded Thai player Ratchanok Intanon were among the others to make the last eight.
