ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - The chairman of the Turkish Athletics Federation has resigned after several doping scandals involving the country s track and field athletes.

Mehmet Terzi, who has led the organization since 2004, writes in a resignation letter that "I thought it would be right that I step down."
Turkey s doping issues threaten to affect Istanbul s bid for the 2020 Olympics, which will be decided in September.

On Wednesday, two-year bans were announced for nine Turkish athletes, including two teenagers, who tested positive for anabolic steroids.

Since May, the IAAF has asked the Turkish federation to investigate Olympic 1,500-meter champion Asli Cakir Alptekin for irregular blood values, and dozens reportedly failed targeted tests before the Mediterranean Games.
