MELBOURNE (AP) - The British and Irish Lions have made five changes to the starting XV for the second test as they bid for a series-clinching win against Australia, bringing Ireland winger Tommy Bowe back from injury and opting for Ben Youngs at scrumhalf at the expense of Mike Phillips.

Head coach Warren Gatland announced his squad Thursday, calling in Mako Vunipola for injured prop Alex Corbisiero and Geoff Parling to replace injured Ireland lock Paul O'Connell.

He added a harder edge to his back with Welsh backrower Dan Lydiate to start on the blindside flank in place of England's Tom Croft, who drops to the bench.

"This is a do or die match for Australia. It's going to be battle," Gatland said. "We said after the first test that we had improvement in us and we are confident that this is the case.

"Several players have put their hands up this week and have forced their way into the test side while several players have returned to fitness."

Phillips was fit enough to play but Gatland said the Welsh No. 9 had some niggling strains and he took a tactical decision to give Youngs a shot the back of the scrum that will feature his brother, Tom, at hooker.

The Lions won the series-opening test 23-21 in Brisbane last weekend and can secure their first series triumph since 1997 with victory in Melbourne on Saturday.

The Lions won the opening test of the previous series in Australia in 2001, but lost the second and third matches in Melbourne and Sydney to surrender a test series to Australia for the first time.

"We want players to constantly push for selection, we then select who is on form and who is available," Gatland said. "Based on that we have selected a squad that is capable of winning the Test and securing the series."

Bowe, who recovered from a hand injury that had threatened his tour, replaces Welsh winger Alex Cuthbert, one of the two tries scorers against Australia last week.

The Australians had two chances to win the match with shots at goal in the last five minutes in Brisbane, but replacement fullback Kurtley Beale missed both attempts including one as the full-time siren sounded.

Beale was named to start at fullback for Australia when Robbie Deans released his team earlier Thursday.
