NEWMARKET, England (AP) - Ruler of the World won the 234th English Derby by 1 ½ lengths on Saturday as pre-race favorite Dawn Approach finished last in the 12-horse race.

Ridden by 2010 winner Ryan Moore and trained by Aidan O Brien, the 7-1 Ruler of the World was followed home in the mile-and-a-half classic by 14-1 Libertarian in second and 25-1 Galileo Rock in third.

"It s a very special day and I m just delighted," Moore told British broadcaster Channel 4. It was O Brien s fourth Derby winner.

Dawn Approach, the 5-4 favorite, never settled for jockey Kevin Manning in the horse s first race at the distance. Manning tried to take up the running on the approach to Tattenham Corner but the writing was on the wall some way out. Ruler of the World showed a smart turn of foot to go clear, pursued by Battle Of Marengo, Galileo Rock and Ocovango.

The gap was closing at the line as Libertarian flashed home to claim second. Battle Of Marengo was fourth, but Dawn Approach was eased markedly.

"I doubt he ll be running over a mile and a half again," trainer Jim Bolger said of Dawn Approach.
