Summary No quad, no medal. And one might not be enough.

LONDON, Ontario (AP) - If you want to know the key to the men s competition at this week s World Figure Skating Championships, just look for the four-revolution jump. It s so essential that coach Brian Orser says "it s not an option anymore" not to have one. And the numbers speak for themselves, with every one of the top men doing one in his short program and at least two in the free skate.

That s a change from just four years ago, when Evan Lysacek won the Olympic gold medal without a quad. But two-time defending world champ Patrick Chan says a sport is supposed to evolve, and it s making figure skating more exciting.

The world championships begin Wednesday with the pairs and men s short programs.
