Summary Police arrest a number of protestors near main stadium as opening ceremony of London Games started.
Police kettled dozens of protesters close to the Olympic Park in east London on Friday night. Those in the police cordon were handcuffed and loaded into police vans. The protesters were from the group Critical Mass, a cycling activist organisation.Police said the protesters had permission to hold a demonstration in south London, but on the condition they do not cross north of the River Thames. The Metropolitan Police Press Bureau said the protesters violated that condition and a number were arrested at Tower Bridge, to the east of central London.Several hours later, around 40 police vans were seen on Stratford High Street, a short distance away from the Olympic Park stadium. The incident occurred just as the Olympics Opening Ceremony, watched by the Queen, visiting heads of state and Olympic athletes was getting underway.Police are allowing protests to take place across the city during the Games by a variety of groups, so long as permission is granted in advance and conditions adhered to.
