Summary Karachi Bar Association postponed annual dinner in honor of CJP Iftikhar Chuadhry.


KARACHI: In the wake of recent protests by MQM against Chief Justice of Pakistan, Karachi Bar Association postponed annual dinner in honor of Iftikhar Chuadhry, media reported on Tuesday.


Media quoting Karachi Bar association President Mehmood-ul-Hassan and Secretary Khalid Mumtaz said that due to current tense situation of the city and association’s election to be held today it was not possible to arrange the annual dinner.


The Chief Justice was scheduled to address the lawyers at annual dinner on December 22 however; the Bar President and Secretary said next date for the event would be announced later.


They said the event was not cancelled but due to busy schedule of lawyers for association election and tense situation of the city it was postponed.


The 66th annual elections of the Karachi Bar Association were postponed due to the law and order situation in the city last week.


Protests were erupted in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas and other cities in Sindh after the Supreme Court of Pakistan issued a contempt notice to Altaf Hussain for making disparaging remarks against the judiciary while addressing different rallies on telephone from London recently.


The court ordered Hussain to be present in court for the hearing on January 7.


In a matter of hours, markets and others facilities were closed down in many areas of Karachi and several other cities of the province.


The protest rallies were held in Karachi and other cities of the province against remarks made by the Chief Justice of Pakistan against the Mutthaida Qaumi Movement and its leader, Altaf Hussain.
