KARACHI (Dunya News) - A judicial commission investigating the Mir Raza murder case has alleged that the initial investigation team failed to preserve crucial evidence and attempted to shift responsibility onto subordinate officers.
The commission, headed by Justice Umar Sial, held a hearing on Thursday during which the judge expressed strong displeasure with the secretary and director general of health over their alleged intervention in the formation and subsequent changes to the medical board constituted for the case.
According to the commission, the initial investigation team, headed by SSP Samiullah Soomro, had severely compromised the case within six days.
The commission observed that footage from only one of 52 available cameras had been obtained during the initial investigation. It further alleged that bushes at the crime scene had been burned, resulting in the destruction of evidence.
The commission also summoned Health Secretary Tahir Hussain Sangi and questioned him about references to his name by two witnesses and the date he assumed his position.
Justice Umar Sial also asked whether Dr Osama worked under the health secretary. Sangi replied that Dr Osama Sheikh was affiliated with an institution under the health department.
The judge observed that Dr Osama’s actions were not only creating controversy around the commission but were also bringing the health department under scrutiny.
Justice Sial said the judicial commission was expected to complete its proceedings by Monday, after which work on preparing its report would begin.
