Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday took cognizance of the energy shortage in the country and the difficulties being experienced by the people. Chairing the first meeting of the Special Committee on Energy Crisis at the PM House, he directed all relevant ministries and PEPCO to work out immediate measures to redress the situation. The meeting reviewed the situation of the supply and demand of electricity as well as oil and gas in various parts of the country. It was decided to ensure regular daily supply of oil and gas in order to obtain optimum capacity of power production in the country. The meeting directed the Ministry of Water and Power to ensure the daily delivery of 35000 tons of furnace oil and 100 mmcfd of additional gas for power plants. The Prime Minister appealed to the general public to show restraint while protesting against the ongoing power crisis in the country. He expressed the confidence that the situation would soon be normalized as a result of the remedial measures being taken by the government. During the meeting the Prime Minister also spoke to Governor Sindh, Dr. Ishrat ul Ibad Khan and Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah on telephone for getting first hand information on the current power situation in Sindh particularly Karachi. Later, the Prime Minister held a meeting with the leading industrialists and discussed possible remedial measures for the power crisis.
