LAHORE (Muhammad Ashfaq) - The Lahore High Court (LHC) has sought a report from the Director General of Rescue 1122 regarding pollution caused by the burning of garbage near a private housing society, while hearing petitions related to smog control and environmental protection.
Justice Shahid Karim heard the petitions filed by Haroon Farooq and others. During the proceedings, a member of the Judicial Commission submitted a report on pollution caused by waste burning behind Paragon Society and informed the court that the Environment Department had made significant efforts to eliminate the illegal dumping site.
The court was told that Environment Department teams have been permanently deployed at the location and that the dumping of waste near Paragon City has been stopped immediately.
During the hearing, the Punjab government’s counsel informed the court that several FIRs had already been registered against the contractor involved. Justice Shahid Karim questioned why the contractor had not yet been arrested and directed authorities to summon him.
The court remarked that the contractor should be clearly warned that such activities would not be tolerated in the future and ordered that an affidavit be obtained from him, assuring that no waste would be dumped at the illegal site again.
The court also sought a report from DG Rescue Dr. Nasir regarding the incident of garbage burning near the private housing society and directed the deputy commissioner to install signboards stating that the area is not a designated dumping site.
Furthermore, the court ordered the relevant SHO to register FIRs against individuals found dumping waste at the site.
The hearing was adjourned until June 11 for further proceedings.
