LAHORE (Web Desk) - Professor Dr Muhammad Afzal Javed has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by King Charles III in recognition of his outstanding services in the field of mental health.

The award was presented during a ceremony held at Windsor Castle on June 2, 2026, where the British monarch honoured distinguished individuals for their contributions in various fields.

Professor Afzal Javed is a former president of the World Psychiatric Association (2020–2023) and a member of the executive committee of Fountain House. He is widely recognised internationally for his work in promoting mental health awareness and services.

Throughout his career, he has played a key role in training professionals, shaping mental health policies, enhancing capacity building, and establishing sustainable mental health services in under-resourced regions.

He has also served in several welfare organisations in the United Kingdom and contributed significantly to community-based mental health initiatives.

In recognition of his national and international contributions, the Government of Pakistan had earlier awarded him the Sitara-i-Imtiaz.

It is worth noting that Professor Afzal Javed is the elder brother of Dr. Muhammad Amjad Saqib, founder of Akhuwat, who has also received Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Hilal-i-Imtiaz for his social services.
