ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday adjourned the hearing of sentence suspension petitions filed by Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha in the controversial tweets case until June 4.
The hearing was conducted by Justice Muhammad Azam Khan. However, proceedings could not move forward due to the absence of the special prosecution team.
The court was informed that a three-member prosecution team had been appointed, with one member travelling from Lahore while another was engaged in Court One. Justice Azam Khan remarked that the prosecution was aware of the Supreme Court’s order regarding the case.
During the hearing, state counsel Ali Azad argued that the timeframe set by the Supreme Court had already expired and that the petitions had been filed in accordance with the apex court’s directives.
Justice Azam Khan observed that all parties were bound by the Supreme Court’s order and asked the prosecution when the case could be heard. The prosecution requested a hearing on Thursday or next Monday.
The court directed that the matter be taken up once the prosecutor was available after proceedings in Court One, while also expressing displeasure over further delays.
Lawyer Faisal Siddiqi requested the court to direct the prosecution not to seek additional adjournments. Subsequently, the court postponed the hearing until Thursday and fixed the case for further proceedings.
It is pertinent to mention that on January 24, 2026, an Islamabad district and sessions court sentenced Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha to a combined 17 years in prison each in the controversial tweets case.
The trial court had imposed imprisonment terms and fines under various provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), while acquitting the two defendants under certain charges.
