Summary Rana Sanaullah said that the PPP is not upset with the government as any constitutional amendment would require broad consensus
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Rana Sanaullah has said that a proposal to increase the voting age is under consideration as part of the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment.
Speaking on a television program, he said that any upcoming constitutional changes would be part of the 28th Amendment.
“It is settled that whatever amendment comes will be the 28th Amendment, because the 27th has already been done. So now, we should expect the 28th Amendment,” he said.
Rana Sanaullah stated that the expected amendment would address fundamental national issues, while clarifying that it would not include any clause related to the armed forces.
He noted that although some individuals favor a presidential system, there is broad consensus that Pakistan’s parliamentary democratic system remains the most suitable for the country.
The minister said that matters such as the National Finance Commission (NFC) award, population growth, water distribution, and other administrative issues are being discussed from different perspectives.
He added that if consensus is reached on any of these matters, they could be implemented through constitutional amendments where necessary.
Raising the voting age is also under consideration, he said, arguing that if the minimum age for contesting elections is set at 25, then voting is also a significant responsibility that may require reconsideration of eligibility criteria.
Rana Sanaullah further said that the Pakistan Peoples Party is not upset with the government, and emphasized that any constitutional amendment would require broad consensus among political stakeholders.
