Summary Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved a task force to develop Pakistan’s national waste to energy policy and investment framework

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the formation of a task force on waste to energy initiatives in Pakistan.

According to an official statement, the task force will review the existing waste to energy framework in the country and formulate a new national policy for the sector’s development.

The body will prepare a comprehensive national waste to energy policy focused on encouraging private sector participation, establishing a clear strategy, strengthening institutional mechanisms, and developing a detailed roadmap.

Sardar Awais Leghari will head the task force as convener, while Musadik Malik, Bilal Azhar Kayani, federal secretaries, and relevant secretaries from all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir will also be members.

The statement added that experts from the private sector have also been included to help promote investment and modern technology in the waste to energy sector.

The task force will examine the current waste-to-energy system, international best practices, and legal, regulatory, financial, and operational barriers, besides proposing recommendations to address these challenges.

Its terms of reference also include proposals related to legislation, regulatory reforms, investment promotion, coordination mechanisms, and effective implementation of waste-to-energy projects.
