KARACHI (Dunya News) - The Sindh High Court has dismissed a petition seeking the restoration of student unions, imposing a fine on the petitioner during the hearing.

During the proceedings, the court ordered the petitioner to deposit a fine of Rs10,000 with the Sindh High Court Clinic. The decision was announced after the petitioner failed to provide satisfactory responses to the court’s queries.

Justice Adnan-ul-Karim Memon, while making remarks during the hearing, questioned the intent behind restoring student unions. He observed that the education sector was already in a fragile state and asked why further disruption was being sought. The court also inquired about the purpose and benefits of student unions.

In response, the petitioner’s counsel argued that student unions are meant to provide students with representation in policy-making processes. However, Justice Memon raised concerns, comparing student unions to factory unions, and questioned whether students intended to pressure or threaten vice chancellors.

The court further asked about the petitioner’s current status, including whether they were still a student. It was also noted that the case file contained documents dating back to 2021, to which the petitioner could not provide a clear explanation.

Following the arguments, the court rejected the petition and imposed a fine, bringing the proceedings to a close.
