WASHINGTON (Dunya News) — A US magazine Foreign Affairs revealed that India’s claim of being a strong strategic partner of the United States is weakening after recent developments.
According to Foreign Affairs recent analysis, relations between Washington and New Delhi have been under their most severe strain in history since the Pakistan-India ceasefire in May 2025. Pakistan openly praised US President Donald Trump’s role in the ceasefire, while India rejected American mediation.
The magazine stated that repeated mentions by the US President of Pakistan’s diplomatic and military successes, along with positive ties with Pakistani leadership, have caused diplomatic embarrassment for India. The US President also refused to sign a proposed trade agreement with India and imposed additional tariffs on Indian exports, further damaging bilateral relations.
Foreign Affairs noted that these actions have led to a growing perception in the US that India may not be a reliable strategic partner.
Experts argue that if India distances itself from the US over minor diplomatic disputes, it indicates that India is not a confident and stable partner. The fragility of a 25-year relationship based merely on ego and rhetoric highlights the institutional weakness of the partnership.
Analysts also said that the Pakistan-India ceasefire was made possible through US intervention at India’s request. However, India avoids acknowledging this due to internal political reasons. The issue is not American mediation, but India’s desire to maintain complete control over the narrative.
The analysts further pointed out that India rejects US mediation while simultaneously seeking unconditional US support against China — a clear contradiction.
