Glaciers melting, climate change bringing disasters: Musadik Malik
Pakistan
Says the federal government is fully backing provincial authorities
ISLAMABAD(Dunya News) – Federal Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik warned on Sunday that Pakistan is facing serious disasters due to climate change, with rising temperatures causing glaciers to melt and rivers to flood.
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad alongside NDMA Chairman Lt. Gen. Inam Haider, Malik said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is receiving updates “round the clock” on the flood situation.
“Climate change is a reality,” Malik said. “Pakistan’s share in global carbon emissions is very small, yet we are among the countries most badly hit. Entire communities are under threat, but the nation is standing together in this crisis.”
He added that 7 to 10 countries are responsible for nearly 70% of global carbon emissions, while Pakistan continues to suffer the fallout through extreme rains and floods. “Rising heat is melting our glaciers, creating dangerous conditions,” he warned.
The minister noted that Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir is personally monitoring the flood response, and the federal government is fully backing provincial authorities. Malik also appealed to philanthropists and citizens to step forward to help flood-hit families.
“We had already warned the provinces six months ago about an intense monsoon season. Right now, our coordination with provincial governments is stronger than ever,” he said.
Meanwhile, NDMA Chairman Lt. Gen. Inam Haider said more rains are expected over the next three to four days. “We are issuing alerts and keeping a close eye on all rivers. All institutions are working hand in hand to deal with this emergency,” he added.
